Food Allergies and Protein Smoothies
We have a plethora of food allergies here. And Mr. F has become a bit of a picky eater in that he doesn’t eat much meat. He can’t have dairy or peanut butter and doesn’t like almond butter, and he only likes beans once or twice a week. He does, however, like chocolate and spinach and coconut milk.
Now, before I go any further spilling his favorite Chocolate Covered Cherry green smoothie recipe, I want to discuss the necessity of a good blender. If you are an allergy family, a paleo family, a smoothie family, or really a family that cooks even occasionally, you should have a good blender. For today’s smoothie, we are using the Oster Pro 1200 Plus food processor and blender combo.
The Oster Pro 1200 Plus is a wonderful value and you can get a $10 off coupon for the Oster brand at Target. There are 7 speeds and Smart Settings technology to make blending and processing a breeze. ย There are touch buttons for milkshakes, smoothies, and salsa. The blades rotate in both directions to do an extremely through job of chopping up everything you put in the wide based blender. The drive is also all metal so it will last for a long time. Bonus: The bender is impact resistant, temperature resistant, and dishwasher safe! I’d recommend this as a great option for families who are looking for a good blender that is also economical. It would also be a great Christmas gift for college students since it has a very compact design.
Now, about that smoothie.
Dairy Free Protein Smoothie
Mr. F has many smoothies he loves, but this Chocolate Covered Cherry Smoothie is his favorite. You will need:
- 1 cup of organic coconut milk
- 1 cup organic baby spinach
- 1/2 cup filtered water
- 1 cup of frozen cherries
- 1 scoop of About Time Vegan Protein Powder
- 1 TBS chia seeds
The trick to any green smoothie is to add the greens to the liquid and blend before you add anything else. Typically, the higher powered your blender, the better this process goes. The Oster Pro 1200 Plus did a great job of chopping up the greens into microscopic bits.
Mr. F adding the rest of the ingredients to the blender after the greens were chopped up. He is such a great helper. Both he and Mr. T love making smoothies and because there is a button on the blender just for smoothies, it’s vey simple for them to help. After everything is blended together, pour your smoothie into a cup and drink up!
