Raising boys. It’s apparently a whole vibe, whatever that means. But our goal has always been to raise men.
.
Semantics are not something to be dismissed, friend. Stop letting the world dictate to you the stages of childhood and parenting. These boys are meant to be men of valor, as God intended. Just as we, their mothers, are called to be women of valor.
.
Fight the good fight. Keep the faith. Be rebellious against the culture that tells you to hustle, to believe that teen years are awful and inevitable, that you can’t do anything worthwhile if you serve God first and family second. Stop buying into the lie that you are enough and that you deserve anything other than eternal condemnation but for the grace of Christ and His sacrifice for you.
.
Be a warrior. Raise warriors. Love in Truth, laugh in love, and teach your young men to be able and brave.
.
This culture of death and despotism can only be defeated by Truth, goodness, and beauty. May we raise warriors who hold on to their Savior and do not give a millimeter to the enemy.

The educating of a person is a responsibility with

The educating of a person is a responsibility with eternal implications. We are not simply pouring facts all tabula rasa style when we embrace the #CharlotteMason method. We are agreeing that our children are created Imago Dei and because of that they are worthy of our best efforts to cultivate, to tend, to invite wonder, to discuss hard things, to help weed out flesh driven inclinations, and to instill good habits as we endeavor to educate them heart, mind, body and soul.
.
Thankfully we have the Holy Spirit, the true imparter of wisdom, to both guide us and fill in for our insufficiencies. We have the Author of Truth and beauty to cling to, we have the Word to intercede on our behalf. We have the Scriptures to test everything against and to give us hope and reproof and help.
.
We are not alone on this arduous adventure. And as we progress day by day it serves us well to remember the words of Susan Schaffer Macaulay, “One day we will stand before the Creator. Were we willing to give, serve, and sacrifice “for the children’s sake”?”

Skills may get rusty, dusty, or go backwards- but you don’t ever really lose them.

I think it’s fitting that the first thing I ever learned to sew on a machine was a simple, green apron with white lace trim for 4-H. And after 7-8 years of not sewing, my first project was an apron for a Christmas gift. Not quite as simple as the first, but just as practical and fun to make!
.
When we teach skills to our children we are giving them a gift. We are instilling capability, work ethic, and the many lessons that come from failure in trying new things and the confidence that comes with success.
.
Skills are an inward legacy. Just as special and as valuable as those family heirloom legacies in the cedar chest that are outward legacies.
.
Learn something new, revive something old- and teach it to your children. You’ll never regret giving them something that can’t be taken away.

We spent the morning with the boys learning how to

We spent the morning with the boys learning how to level, ice, and decorate cakes. Mr. F’s is pictured. And because we are a gluten free family they couldn’t eat it 🤣.
.
But they had fun and it was a nice field trip to begin the term! I firmly believe in never starting back to “school” on a Monday. And if possible, start back with a field trip or a fun day!

To live is to be burdened with joy, loss, trials, hope, suffering, waiting, and love. We know this as Christians, but living it out is more difficult than simply acknowledging the reality of it. And what is home education if not learning through life?
.
When you are homeschooling through hard times one of the first things we often set aside is time in the Word and prayer. It’s been said that if the devil can’t make you bad then he’ll make you busy. Hard times often require extra of us and leave us depleted and that makes us easy targets.
.
My first and best tip is to make your time for Bible study and prayer even more of a priority during difficult times. Even if you need to shorten the length of your study, make sure that daily you are feeding on the Word. The Dwell app is a wonderful way to listen to the Bible as you go about your chores.
.
My next tip is to dial back your academics. When our family is struggling we utilize more audiobooks, we make sure math and individual reading/narrations get done, and we put all the other subjects on a loop and do as we are able. As life begins to ease up again we add things back until we’ve resumed our normal schedule.
.
This is one reason why we love schooling year round- we have the space to adjust as needed.

It’s been such a dear and pleasant journey taking my boys through Little Women. I do relish the sweet quiet moments we have, though they are few and far between. Our days are often boisterous and loud with the rationed tenderness of active boys and the overzealous physical affection that is more like wrestling than the tiny soft squeezed hugs of their toddler years.
.
There is no lack of warmth and wonder in our home, and I am so very grateful that this life of constantly laying myself aside to better serve my family is the path of sanctification the Lord chose for me. I hope and pray that you, too, can ignore the many voices telling you that you “should be/do more”.
.
We are the life-givers, the grace-makers, the home-builders, the confidants, the comforters, and the refuge defenders the world so desperately needs. We each of us hold in our capacity the Marmee our family and community will benefit from best.
.
Hug your dear ones, know how much you are loved, and give the day’s graces and griefs to your loving Father this and every night.

I could list authors, influencers, or other friends on the Gram- but the real people who I find inspirational are you. The incredible moms here in our community.
.
The moms who email me for prayer- because they are tired from striving and are trying so hard to learn to love what must be done. You inspire me.
.
The moms who have no family support but find support and encouragement in our community here and then step in to encourage others. You inspire me.
.
The moms who never give up and fight with such tenacity for their children’s needs. You inspire me.
.
The moms who share the joys, the trials, the prayers, the failures, the hopes, the successes- and who diligently stay the path. You inspire me.
.
The moms who read Shakespeare and Plutarch while washing and mending and gardening and canning and homesteading and working. You inspire me.
.
And I’m so very grateful to be allowed a small part in your homeschool journey. May your heart be filled with joy and peace that surpasses all understanding!

Are you ready to bake some Advent cookies? We love these **Amish Maple Iced Cookies**:

**Cookie ingredients**:

4 large eggs

1 C of sugar

1 C of brown sugar, packed

1 1/2 C of butter

1 C of milk

5 C of flour

2 tsp of baking soda

4 tsp of baking powder

1 1/2 tsp of salt

3 tbsp of maple flavoring

**Icing ingredients**:

2 C of confectioner's sugar

1/4 C of maple syrup

1-2 tbsp of milk

2 tbsp of melted butter

**Directions**:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a baking mat, set aside.

In a mixer blend together eggs, sugar, brown sugar and butter till combined.

In a separate bowl mix flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.

Add the flour mixture, milk and maple flavoring into the mixer then mix till combined.

Using an ice cream scoop, scoop out batter onto the lined cookie sheet, leave at least 1 to 2 inches of space in between each scoop.

Dip a spoon in water and press the tops down gently till flattened.

Bake for 10-15 minutes.

Once baked, allow cookies too cool for 10 minutes or until cool to touch. Enjoy with a strong cup of English tea for a lovely tea time!
