When you have infants and toddlers one of the most frustrating things is not being able to communicate well with them. Especially if they want something in particular or they are hurting. ASL (American Sign Language) is such a valuable tool for this!
We were doubly blessed when Mr. T was a toddler that we were already learning ASL together before his vaccine injury. We know lots of families with Apraxia and other challenges that use ASL. Now, it is sometimes difficult to get him to use his signs since he thinks he is speaking perfectly fine. We had so much fun with For His Own Glory this weekend that he is happily signing again! Mr. F has picked up several new animal signs as well. His favorite is “cat”.
For His Own Glory Barnyard Collection is the first in what we hope will be a very long series of super sweet Christian based ASL learning DVDs. The video is set to music from classic hymns and at the end of each segment there is a sweet moment where the children say “Thank You, God for creating ______”. After just the first few segments, Mr. T was signing and saying it, too! And he was a huge fan of the sweet Miss Grace, who is the narrator and guide for each sign. Having slightly older children to imitate seems to be a big motivator for both my boys.
The Barnyard Collection covers 12 different animal signs with a few additional signs that can be picked up while watching the opening song and extra phrases throughout. There are fun finger puppets, counting and letter recognition and sight words worked into each segment as well. There is even fun stop motion animation that made Mr. T go “whoa!”. This is a perfect set for toddlers and preschoolers, even early elementary would find it fun and engaging.
The program is just long enough that I had to break it up into 2 parts for Mr. F to see the whole thing, but Mr. T watched it all the way through a few times. He’s particularly fond of the donkey segment. He thinks it’s funny to he-haw as loudly as possible. I am delighted that both boys really enjoyed this God-centered program and are learning new signs through it. I would recommend this for every family with toddlers, preschoolers and special needs families who want to assist their little ones with communication and an appreciation of all God has given us.
