.
The Riches.
.
But my most favorite resource is you, friend. The dedicated and devoted mother who loves her children well and recognizes them as persons worthy of time and grace and effort. You who prayerfully craft each year and each subject for each child, and leave the gaps and the struggles in the hands of the Holy Spirit. You who share tea times, favorite stories, beloved poems and art, and time- that precious and finite gift- with your children. You who encourage your fellow homeschool mamas and cheer them on.
.
You are heart of the modern Charlotte Mason community. And you are the very best part and the most wonderful resource . Keep on spreading the feast and sharing the beauty and doing it all for our good and His glory!

Planning the new term or year is something that I

Planning the new term or year is something that I delight in! But it wasn’t always this way.
.
For many years I did the curriculum hop, the second guessing myself, the Instagram and Pinterest scrolls of doom, and the overachieving plans written in ink (and tears). There’s no reason to put yourself through all that, sweet friend!
.
Don’t try to emulate the plan that works for someone else’s family. It might look great from where you’re sitting but the adage about grass looking greener is never more true than when persons you are responsible for educating are involved. I promise.
.
When I share the books and curricula that work for our family it’s to provide inspiration and encouragement. There is no perfect formula, but there is a set of 20 Principles that are pretty close to perfect for planning an education around your specific children 😉. I deleted the IG app in early June and have been blissfully ignoring social media since. I hope your summer is going wondrously well, friend!

Here are all my boys, hubby and faithful fur ball included, enjoying some handicraft time outdoors. Carving and smithing are their things, and I’ve been busy canning up all our summer fruit. I find myself feeling evermore grateful for the quiet life and the blessings that allow us this time together as a family.

Charlotte Mason’s Principle 2: Good & Evil Nature of a Child
.
Children are not born bad but with possibilities for good and for evil.
.
When you first read this statement, it appears to go against Christian principles. What about the sin nature that Adam and Eve passed down? Aren’t we all sinners with the likelihood to be bad? Yes, but this statement is actually referring to choices.
.
Children are not born as a blank piece of paper, they have choices. They have a will to make the right one. We, as parents and teachers, can teach and train our children to make good decisions.
.
While education alone is not the answer for godly decisions, it’s a vessel to fill the mind with truth and knowledge. The Bible is the perfect place to start — the infallible word! Then, our heart can be nurtured to accept these truths and convince the will to make the right choice.
.
As the Bible teaches, “Train up a child in the way they should go, and they will not depart from it”. An important part of training is teaching habit forming techniques.
.
As Charlotte herself said, “The mother who takes pains to endow her children with good habits secures for herself smooth and easy days.”
.

Self-education- how are you modeling this remarkable and imperative habit?
.
We often forego our self-education in this culture that glorifies “busy”, so it has become even more important to be intentional in scheduling our time wisely to ensure we are still learning. Invest time in learning- read, learn new skills, and develop new habits. Give yourself a plate at the table where you teach your children the Feast.
.
What we do speaks to our children so much more than what we say. Show them that life made all the more rich when you fill it with intentional investment in Truth, goodness, and beauty.
.

One way we’ve been able to cater to the needs of

One way we’ve been able to cater to the needs of the boys’ various learning challenges and styles is through field trips. It’s an incredible way to bring history to life, to make great works of art tangible, and to help our children understand the humanity of people they never met.
.
Both boys are working on Apologetics for Trail Life so visiting the @creationmuseum and @arkencounter just made sense. Plus their mama and Poppy had both been wanting to go 😁.
.
We had an amazing time. We all learned so much and left with many new things to consider. As it always goes with such trips. What a blessing!
.

Ebenezer stones are markers. And there are things that need remembered, if you’ll forgive my Appalachian eloquence.
.
I once was lost, but now am found.
.
I was blessed to become a mother twice over.
.
The Lord redeemed the days when he called our family to homeschool.
.
I have no greater joy than to see my children walking in grace as brothers in Christ.
.
I am sanctified more each day through the mercies of my God as I parent and lead these precious ones.
.
I have the privilege of watching my boys grow into men of valor.
.
I have a husband who leads us and shepherds our boys by words and example.
.
We have a church family that takes great care of us, loves us, and challenges us.
.
There are no small joys, friend. Every moment we see the glory and grace of our amazing God is a moment worth making another Ebenezer marker and proclaiming His goodness to the world.
.
I have seen the goodness of God in the broken world in which we live. I have seen the glimpses of glory in the shimmering drops of rain as they collect so many rainbows on the petals of a rose. I have seen the faithfulness of my Lord in answered prayers, especially those that were answered in ways I didn’t want. I have tasted the waters of grief and been thankful that they made me thirst more for Jesus and the world to which I belong. Do you belong there, too, friend?
.
My hope is that someday we will meet in Glory, and will know that while we traversed this life as internet strangers but friends there was never a moment we weren’t cheering each other on toward the cry of “Well done!”
.

Sometimes to be courageous requires that we be reminded of whose we are. As you begin this homeschool journey or continue on the path with dedication, dear friend, remember that parenthood is a holy calling. And Christ will always equip us for what He is calling us to. Including the education of the precious souls entrusted to our care.

Today we’re discussing my favorite of Charlotte’s principles, the primary recognition that children are born persons. This concept has shaped and changed my views of motherhood and education in more ways than I can count. From my musings:
.
“ A child as a person includes the capacious nature of their hearts. They have an innate ability to love with all the fierceness and loyalty we imagine in the hearts of the bravest heroes. Where we grownups often struggle, they are so earnest and sincere in prayer and gentleness and forgiveness. They still have a sin nature, just like adults, but they have a conscience and a bit of humility, too, that is exclusive to childhood. Their innocence – perhaps lack of cynicism is more apropos – allows them the freedom to ask any question that comes of what they see or hear.”
.
When you recognize your child as a person- created Imago Dei and with a God given purpose- your perspective shifts to a more eternal one and the methods you employ in parenting and in personal life change dramatically. I am not the same person I was before I met Charlotte and I am grateful that the Lord led her to share her passion for children and personal responsibility in writing so that we might benefit from her insight, too.
