Having a child with sensory challenges can be a bit, well, challenging at times. Teaching your child how to self-regulate is a major accomplishment! With SPD, Apraxia, ADHD, and generally high energy boys this is something we are always working on.
We have been having incredible success getting the boys to decompress on their own in this beautiful teepee from TeePee Joy! It’s a quiet place they can go to to be alone when they become a bit overwhelmed. If you know a child with sensory needs, this is the perfect gift for them!
Disclosure: We received the teepee pictured from TeePee Joy for review purposes. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own and as always, we only recommend products we find value in and think you will, too.
Some of the coping skills we have been teaching the boys include letting us know they need a few minutes, using their sensory swing and weighted Warmie buddies, and taking a time in in their TeePee Joy teepee. We have a basket of their favorite calm-down picture books just outside the door of their teepee for them to choose from.
Allowing the boys to declare it their own space for a time also helps them learn how to set boundaries and how to share when it’s time to give their sibling the chance to enjoy the space.
What makes TeePee Joy so great?
These teepees are crafted with very sturdy fabric that comes in a beautiful selection of colors and styles. It washes up beautifully, too! Lee handcrafts these in the USA with her family, so you are getting a custom made beautiful heirloom you can keep to pass to your kids’ kids someday.
The wooden poles are sturdy, but the design is also light and easily moved from one place to another. The quilted pad for the “floor” is soft and makes the teepee super cozy. The shaped pillows are delightful and they create a great “crash” pad for kids who like deep pressure.
I have actually stowed away in the TeePee with my coffee on days when I needed a few minutes of quiet. The filtered light is quite soothing and it was rather funny when the boys thought I had just disappeared. This also gives you an idea of how big the tent is. All three of us can fit inside sitting up to read or play Spot It! together.
Finding quality products that will also last up against the needs of our sensory kids is sometimes tough, but TeePee Joy has absolutely given us a gem of a hideaway!
And if Mr. F passing out in our TeePee isn’t the best testimony ever, I don’t know what is! Go check TeePee Joy out here and let me know which design is your favorite.
