My biggest homeschool challenge and detractor has

My biggest homeschool challenge and detractor has always been myself. My weak and sin filled nature - pride, impatience, times of little faith, selfishness, “self” reliance as if I’m enough- these are the pitfalls of this very human mama. These are deadly to a content home and a grace filled homeschool.
.
“Let each of the Appetites, so necessary to our bodies, be our servant and not our master, and remember, above all things, that sin and slavery to any Appetite begin in our thoughts. It is our thoughts that we must rule, and the way to rule them is very simple. We just have to think of something else when an evil thought comes, something really interesting and nice, with a prayer in our hearts to God to help us to do so.” - Charlotte Mason

Countering these common sins in a me-centric culture requires vigilance and a constant reliance on prayer and staying in the Word. For we cannot expect from our children good habits and wise thoughts if we do not have them ourselves.
.
Caring for others is a gift that pulls us out of our own small world and places us in the humble and glorious estate of servanthood- where the world becomes more clear and our hearts are more easily aligned with Christ.
.
Thank the Lord for His promises of continuing to work in us to make us more like Him till the day we get to be with Him in glory!
.
In the meantime, sweet friend, let us run this race well. Let us continue to take captive our appetites and attitudes and serve with gladness and humility these precious blessings we are training up in the Lord. As we see them grow in grace and Truth there truly is no greater joy💗

“How we need more “homemakers” so that all who live in this transient, contemporary world might have a place to belong, to feel loved and valued, to serve and be served, to give and receive and celebrate all that is good.” - @sally.clarkson

I find that the more tumultuous the world becomes, the more determined I am that our home be a refuge. The joys of feeding the hearts and minds of my children, and feeding the bellies of family, friends, neighbors and strangers have given my own weary heart such a sweet repose.
.
Daily romps in the garden, stick sword fighting adventures, water balloon ambushes, and candlelit family read alouds are making this time so very sweet. Today, I spent a little time baking.
.
The smell of fresh baked bread is such a cozy smell. And when your doubled recipe makes extra, vanilla bean cinnamon bread makes for a perfect breakfast treat!
.
On the days the world seems to be closing in, dear one, remember that you are not merely a housekeeper toiling away at tedious tasks, but you are a glorious homemaker with a Kingdom purpose raising a generation of world changers. Courage, dear heart! Let us persevere and continue blessing those around us as we banish the darkness from our homes one sweet, servant-hearted action at a time.

Today we’re discussing how Charlotte Mason has helped us grow. My favorite of Charlotte’s principles is the first. This concept has shaped and changed my views of motherhood and education in more ways than I can count. From my musings:

“ A child as a person includes the capacious nature of their hearts. They have an innate ability to love with all the fierceness and loyalty we imagine in the hearts of the bravest heroes. Where we grownups often struggle, they are so earnest and sincere in prayer and gentleness and forgiveness. They still have a sin nature, just like adults, but they have a conscience and a bit of humility, too, that is exclusive to childhood. Their innocence – perhaps lack of cynicism is more apropos – allows them the freedom to ask any question that comes of what they see or hear.”

When you recognize your child as a person- created Imago Dei and with a God given purpose- your perspective shifts to a more eternal one and the methods you employ in parenting and in personal life change dramatically. I am not the same person I was before I met Charlotte and I am grateful that the Lord led her to share her passion for children and personal responsibility in writing so that we might benefit from her insight, too.

One of the most common reasons I hear people say t

One of the most common reasons I hear people say they “don’t like” the Charlotte Mason philosophy of education is the focus on nature. Because they are not outdoorsy people.

🍂I’m not either 😬 At least not by nature. (Forgive the corny pun) But I have learned over the years that the Lord teaches us, encourages us, guides us, and restores us often by way of nature.

🌊 “He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” Psalms‬ ‭23:2-3‬

🐾When we study nature, we begin to experience the science of relations that Miss Mason speaks of, and we get to see the Great Recognition take hold and grow in our children. So to help simplify things-

🕵️‍♂️ Observe nature specifically on one walk/outdoor exploration time each week.
📸 Take photos to journal later if you don’t want to carry supplies with you.
📕 Find a good local nature guide or app for identification.
🙋‍♂️ Ask your children a few questions to help them really see the object of your observation - not just giving it a passing glance.
✅ Schedule your weekly time so that you get it in every week. A half hour to an hour has always worked beautifully for our family.

Most of all, remember to enjoy the creation and thank our Creator for all His good and perfect gifts.

Being a student of our children is something that takes great intention and an active pursuit. We must plant, nurture, prune, and weed wisely.

Cultivating grace and beauty in our homes is a liturgy of love we practice often without remembering just how joyful our hearts should be in tending to the daily tasks of provision and care through which we are blessed and sanctified. Joy is a choice, dear friend. And even when the wolves are at the door and the world seems to be on fire- our homes are our domains to guard, to beautify, and to tend. With Christ as our shield and light we can choose to do these tasks He has called us to in a spirit of power, love, and self-control. He gives us what we need and it is all found in Him. May you rest and abide in His promises and care as you go through this week.

Growing good things takes time, patience, diligenc

Growing good things takes time, patience, diligence, nurture, pruning, weeding, and taking time to enjoy not just the fruit but the labor itself.
.
This is not a post or point about gardening, friend. It’s just the lessons the Lord has taught me through tending the earth that have been instrumental in tending to my children and home. I hope the reminder sparks joy and rest and growth for you, too.

Today’s #charlottemasonmondays topic is #charlottemasonjoy. If there are adequate words to describe how life giving and joyful Charlotte Mason methodology has been for our home and home education- I cannot find them.
.
Once you truly believe and implement her first principle that each child is a unique presentation of Imago Dei created with God given interests, talents, and needs there is a shift in how you view your child and the purpose of education.
.
Education is not about academics when you acknowledge that the Holy Spirit is responsible for imparting wisdom. Education is about Truth, goodness, and beauty filling a mind and laying a strong foundation for character to develop. Education requires of the educator the discipline to spread the feast and then step back for the Holy Spirit to take care of the digesting and use of what we present.
.
When we restrain our inclination to be Jiminy Cricket for our children we allow them to wrestle with their knowledge and through wise and purposeful letting alone we see them understand and grow. We shepherd them through the process instead of bludgeoning them with information. And the results are remarkable.
.
To see a child make natural connections is a joy to our mother hearts. To watch a child delight in learning is boon to our spirit. To have a child wonder at Creation and desire to know more about the Creator is a blessing.
.
The deep joys of learning and growing in grace and truth are truly marvels. And I’m so thankful for the godly woman who laid out such beautiful principles that have helped fill our lives with joy!

We’ve been living. Slow, sacred days full of new

We’ve been living. Slow, sacred days full of new friends, fun moments, and hard work. Sometimes stepping away for a bit brings the clarity that only comes from disconnecting and distance. I highly recommend social media breaks!
.
I’ve replenished our home canned pantry. I have put out many plants (I grew from seed 🌱) this week (zone 7b/8a line). I have cooked from scratch. I have played the piano. I have awakened before sunrise to have coffee in hand and listen to God’s glorious symphonic creation sing in the first golden rays of the day.
.
I have been present in the moments. And I cannot say that I have missed the online world. The incessant pull of all the to-dos combined with all the crazy of the world can be a bit much for me. You, too?
.
I hope the last few weeks have been full of little wonders for you, too!

To live is to be burdened with joy, loss, trials, hope, suffering, waiting, and love. We know this as Christians, but living it out is more difficult than simply acknowledging the reality of it. And what is home education if not learning through life?
.
When you are homeschooling through hard times one of the first things we often set aside is time in the Word and prayer. It’s been said that if the devil can’t make you bad then he’ll make you busy. Hard times often require extra of us and leave us depleted and that makes us easy targets.
.
My first and best tip is to make your time for Bible study and prayer even more of a priority during difficult times. Even if you need to shorten the length of your study, make sure that daily you are feeding on the Word. The Dwell app is a wonderful way to listen to the Bible as you go about your chores.
.
My next tip is to dial back your academics. When our family is struggling we utilize more audiobooks, we make sure math and individual reading/narrations get done, and we put all the other subjects on a loop and do as we are able. As life begins to ease up again we add things back until we’ve resumed our normal schedule.
.
This is one reason why we love schooling year round- we have the space to adjust as needed.
