Online Learning for Kids
Did you ever balk at people who talked about how great online learning could be? I’m pretty sure I gave an eye-roll or two. Then I had kids.
One of the challenges we have in our homeschool is that Mr. T having dyslexia means that Mr. F, who has always loved letters and numbers and books, is on the same level in some things. The contention is difficult to maneuver through sometimes and separating them for reading was one way to bring some calm back into our school. But how to do that?
Enter Reading Eggs. Perfect online learning for my independent little man!
Disclosure: I was given Reading Eggs for review purposes and was compensated for my time. As always, we only recommend programs that we feel are beneficial to us and will be helpful to your homeschool as well. A positive review was not required.
Being able to work with Mr. T on his reading while Mr. F is in a different area working on his has been a great relief. There is much less bickering at the homeschool table because little brother got the word before big brother. Hallelujah!
Plus, there’s an app for Reading Eggs so when the boys beg for iPad time they have a game that helps Mr. T review and Mr. F learn their reading skills. Be sure to sign up here for a 4 week free trial of Reading Eggs! It is absolutely a great addition to your homeschool.
Reading Eggs Games and Results
- Reading Eggs has multiple levels including Reading Eggs Junior for the 2-4 year olds, Reading Eggs for 5-7 year olds, and Reading Eggspress for 7 and up.
- The same great minds who developed Reading Eggs also created MathSeeds, a complimentary math program accessible from the same online or app portal so the kids don’t “accidentally” end up on MineCraft when they are supposed to be doing reading or math.
- The insights in the parent portal are great for keeping track of skills your child is excelling in as well as skills that might need some extra reinforcement.
- The bonus materials are simple, fun, and a great way to review skills.
- It is an excellent review of phonics skills for struggling readers with a no-pressure system to help keep it fun.
You get emailed progress reports! Because I sometimes forget to check in to the parent portal section of the online games, it is awesome to have the information I need sent to me this way. I also know by his scores if I need to print off bonus materials to help reinforce the concepts he has learned or if he is doing well enough to proceed as he wishes.
Our Verdict
We love Reading Eggs! It’s been a great addition, simple to keep up with, Mr. F loves playing the games and is learning so much. I can’t think of a reason not to keep using it with our little reader. Are you going to give it a try? Let me know what you think!
MathSeeds
We really have enjoyed MathSeeds! Many of the awesome parental information pieces are included with MathSeeds as well. MathSeeds is also included in the 4 week free trial.
The games are simply adorable and full of fun ways for the kids to learn and remember their math facts. Both boys love the games, I love that they are working on something good while they “veg out” during their allowed screen time. It’s also nice for them to have the option to work on math within the same framework so there’s no bouncing from one app to another or one website to another which lessens distractions a lot.
