Meet Peter (I know, it’s not original, and I’m not even sure if it was a “he”, but Mr. T likes Peter Rabbit stories right now so that’s what we went with 🙂 Peter was carried through our back yard by Aslan, our lab mix, along with the pile of gray rabbit wool you see surrounding him in the picture below. Peter was rescued from Aslan by John, the husband, who brought him inside for me to check over. I don’t know anything about rabbits, but Peter was still intact. We let him calm down, checked him over for any punctures and thankfully found none.
John explaining to Mr. T about Peter and having to be gentle. Mr. T was fascinated, and so was I. I still want a bunny rabbit, but I digress. Peter was so little his eyes were not even open yet. And he fit in the palm of your hand. After much research, we found that the “smell” of humans did not bother mommy rabbits, and that they only visit their nest at night to feed the babies. So after his traumatic afternoon, we returned Peter to where his nest had been before Aslan found it and covered him with his mommy’s fluff.
The next day, we checked on Peter and found him to be full and warm so mommy bunny had indeed returned. Yay! We followed the advice of several online forums and placed a wheelbarrow over the nest to keep Aslan out. But we enjoyed our visit with Peter and it reminded me of a favorite hymn from childhood. Do you remember this one?
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colours,
He made their tiny wings.
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all
Oh, wow! He is so super tiny! How awesome you guys were able to save him and share that experience with T. Love, Love Love!!! I’ve not heard the above hymn…it’s beautiful. I’m going to share it with my little ones =)
That is so awesome. Glad you did the research and put him back for momma to take care of. But what a great lesson for the little one. Cannot wait to see you Wednesday!
