The world feels dark and tumultuous right now. So The world feels dark and tumultuous right now. So many storms both physical and spiritual seem to be battling in every realm. And the world? Well, friends, the world and the prince of the air are trying desperately to remove all things true, good, and beautiful. . But we know Truth and we call Him Savior. We know Good and we call Him Jehovah. We know Beauty and we call Him Messiah. There is no good thing that is not a gift sprung from the ever flowing fountain of His grace. . Fight the darkness. Revel in the beautiful. Walk in the Truth with your children. Test each Spirit against the Scriptures. Submit your feelings to obey Christ and the curtain of the darkness will be torn apart. Be bold in your faithfulness and the buds of good fruit will bloom and grow. . May all who come beside and behind us find us faithful. . #everydaygraces
Today for #charlottemasonmondays we are discussing Today for #charlottemasonmondays we are discussing building a home library. I’m sharing a few favorite tips: 1. Buy used books! Shop small local thrift shops, Goodwills, etc. Shop used on Amazon or Thriftbooks. Buy from the awesome book sellers on IG like @thequietcornerbookstore . 2. Catalog your books. I use the @librarythingofficial app and it’s wonderful! It prevents duplicates and helps me remember if I do actually own a title 🫣 when I’m putting together our curriculum. . 3. Finding good books- I love @reshelvingalexandria , @homegrownbookpicks Facebook group, Ambleside online booklists and friends with similar worldviews for recommendations. . 4. Audiobooks- As a family who enjoys audiobooks together we utilize Audible and have many CD based audiobooks, most of which were thrifted. I track these in LibraryThing, too. . For our family books are integral to our lives. We use them for academic education, entertainment, and learning how to do/make things. There are shelves in every room of our home except the bathrooms. . I began building my own library as a child and have started my own children on the same journey. They have their own flavors of favorites and I am delighted to have the responsibility of curating a starter collection of worthy books for each of them. . Our current home library is around 1700 physical books and 300 audiobooks, 2/3s on CD. Because we don’t really utilize the library (distance, content, etc), this is actually a pretty reasonable amount considering how much we read. To help keep our stock rotated we started a Little Free Library for our neighborhood. I am very judicious in the books we keep long term. We do, after all, have limited space 😏 And my hubby can only build so many shelves to fill the space. I’d love to hear about your home library! . When dealing with language based learning difficul When dealing with language based learning difficulties, we are so blessed to be able to use technology! This morning Audible is streaming Tom Sawyer through the Firestick 🤩 . Our particular brand of dyslexia includes auditory processing. And that can affect comprehension. This year we’re utilizing @memoriapress literature guides with the selections I chose for my 7th grader. He reads the notes in the guide, looks up the vocabulary in Webster’s 1828, then reads the chapter. The next day he *listens* to the chapter and then works through his guide. We discuss the discussion questions together. . He is thrilled with his ability to learn independently. I’m thrilled that he’s learning *how to learn* in a way that accommodates his challenges and helps strengthen them. . And I think #CharlotteMason would approve. While we do severely limit tech in our home for several reasons, we also utilize it in ways that build up and that cater to our family’s needs and convictions. Don’t let legalists deter you from remembering the first and foremost of CM’s principles: Children are born persons. And today for #charlottemasonmondays we are endeavoring to answer it. . A well written book is a treasure. A living book is a legacy. . A living book speaks to the reader and draws them in. It touches heart, mind, and soul and enables understanding. A living book makes knowledge, history, and stories weave together in a magnificent tapestry. A living book grows the whole person. . A living book never speaks down, nor does it present things in a parched and desolate way that dries up the fountain of curiosity that is a child’s mind. . How to create a voracious reader: . Step 1- From t How to create a voracious reader: . Step 1- From the very start read aloud, with vigor, from excellent writing. . Step 2- invest in great audiobooks for when your voice gives out, you’re driving, or you are engrossed in your own book. Great narrators are a must. . Step 3- curate a home library worthy of the exquisite masterpiece that is the mind of a child created in God’s own image. Give them stories of character, stories of boldness, stories of truth, stories of dragons defeated and sacrificial love. . Step 4- Let them see YOU reading and listening to great books. They are imitators- give them actions worth imitating. . Step 5- Repeat from step 1 continuously as they grow. Foster the culture of knowledge, discussion, application, wisdom, and discernment. . This brave boy has never stopped to think that dyslexia should make reading a chore. I’m so grateful that he’s never been in an environment that made him feel less than or convinced him that he “couldn’t” succeed because of learning challenges. Every child is capable of incredible things when given the opportunity. They are all born persons with potential and a Kingdom purpose. Feed their souls with stories to make them brave. Relationship always trumps academics in our home. Relationship always trumps academics in our home. And when we have “those days”, the days where attitudes or struggles or illness or fatigue invite themselves in to cause chaos and disorder, I rely on my skills as a caregiver to soften the atmosphere. . We deal with learning challenges, overexcitabilities, chronic illness/pain, and the attitudes and anxieties that are just part of being humans in a fallen world. I don’t write about them as much as I used to out of respect for my children and I try not to bother people with my own complaints and struggles. We do have our own set of trials here, so please never think it’s sunshine and roses all the time 😊 . When a day goes sideways for whatever reason these are things that I do to reset our attitudes or to move us forward in a gentle way: 🥧 I bake something nice and we settle in for a read aloud or audiobook. . 🫖 Tea over the course of 20 minutes with a lit candle and a small snack can reset a bad moment, allow a respite and regroup, and then everyone goes back to work with a lighter heart. . 📺 Sometimes illness makes regular lessons impossible. We use documentaries, historical movies, and even delightful interpretations of beloved books/plays to screen to get us through. . 🌱 Taking a 30 minute walk through our neighborhood or woods refreshes attitudes and outlooks. We all feel better after time in nature. . 📖 Bible study- we have found that issue specific Bible studies can be very helpful during difficult seasons. We’ve done studies on the vale of work, contentment, sibling relationships, serving others, etc. There’s no better teacher than the Holy Spirit instructing directly through the Word! . 🛌 Rest- Elijah is a great reminder that sometimes we just need a nap and a snack. Mama, this is directed at you. Without adequate rest and nourishment we cannot serve our family well, nor can we set a good example because we get out of sorts and provoke bad moments and days when we neglect our physical and spiritual needs. . Charlotte Mason was a wise lady. The Great Recogni Charlotte Mason was a wise lady. The Great Recognition, as written in her second volume (page 270), is something worth reminding ourselves of very often. ⠀ ⠀ We are ultimately a vessel through which the Lord works and instructs our children and any good that comes through us is FROM Him. ⠀ ⠀ Hallelujah! It's a glorious thing to realize the burden of giving our children wisdom lies with Him instead of our imperfect selves. We just have to teach them in the manner the Lord instructs us to. ⠀ ⠀ Another reason I'm thankful for homeschooling.⠀ ⠀ #everydaygraces #charlottemason

I find that the more tumultuous the world becomes, the more determined I am that our home be a refuge. The joys of feeding the hearts and minds of my children, and feeding the bellies of family, friends, neighbors and strangers have given my own weary heart such a sweet repose. . Daily romps in the garden, stick sword fighting adventures, water balloon ambushes, and candlelit family read alouds are making this time so very sweet. Today, I spent a little time baking. . The smell of fresh baked bread is such a cozy smell. And when your doubled recipe makes extra, vanilla bean cinnamon bread makes for a perfect breakfast treat! . On the days the world seems to be closing in, dear one, remember that you are not merely a housekeeper toiling away at tedious tasks, but you are a glorious homemaker with a Kingdom purpose raising a generation of world changers. Courage, dear heart!
