Do you have Harry Potter fans in your home? Have a fun Harry Potter themed tea at home. I’m sharing recipes, ideas, and resources so you can plan a Harry Potter tea time in your homeschool.
Harry Potter just seems like the perfect themed tea. I mean, you just can’t get more modern-day British. Right?
My boys and I are big fans of literary teas and I just happened to get a beautiful new tea set for Mother’s Day that we hadn’t used yet so we decided to get it out for a Harry Potter Tea.

What You Need for a Harry Potter Inspired Tea
The world of Harry Potter lends itself to a lot of sweet treats. Butterbeer, chocolate frogs, pumpkin pasties, puddings, cakes, and more. I recommend having a hearty and healthy meal beforehand. I share ours below.
Ideas for foods:
- Butterbeer
- Wizard’s Tea
- Sorting Hat Sammies
- Butterbeer Cupcakes
- Eyes of Newt (grapes)
- Quidditch Pie
- Phoenix Feathers (fruit ropes), etc.
You can get as complicated as you like. We kept this one pretty simple, though Mr. T has requested that our next batch of his paleo pop tarts be pumpkin pasties.
Something to listen to:
- Read aloud one of your favorite Harry Potter books
- Listen to the Audible recording by Jim Dale, it’s our favorite! (you can try Audible and get your first book free here)
- Harry Potter Soundtracks are lovely
- The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Maestro Classics will add a magical air to your tea
Ideas for activities:
- Create your own Marauder’s Map
- Have a Hogwart’s Class like Herbology (check out all the other iHomeschool Network Harry Potter posts linked up with the photo below for some great academic lessons)
- Have a Potions class with kitchen chemistry
- Curl up and watch one of your favorite Harry Potter movies
- Have a creative writing prompt about what you would do if you had a Time Turner

Today I’m sharing with you our delightful Harry Potter Tea. We began with a delicious lunch of Quidditch Pie and Butterbeer.
Quidditch Pie and Butterbeer
Let’s discuss picky eaters. Mr. T is generally in this category and Mr. F has on and off days. Both of them thoroughly enjoyed this simple dish. It’s a simplified version of Shepherd’s Pie.
Ingredients: 1 pound of ground chicken, 1 small can of sliced carrots drained, 1/2 a can of sweet green peas with 3 tablespoons of liquid, 1 tablespoon of FlavorGod Everything seasoning, and 2 tablespoons of grated parmesan. Cook it all together in a large skillet and then spoon it into your individual dishes.
Mashed cauliflower is what we used on top, you could use potatoes as well. Just spoon it on, top with shredded parmesan, and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Easy. And delicious.
Butterbeer is also very simple. We use Zevia Cream Soda and add 1 tablespoon of butterscotch ganache and stir. The boys love it! And isn’t Mr. F’s Hedwig the cutest! He loves that owl to bits.
Before I go on, here’s the recipe we use for Butterscotch Ganache: 1 bag of butterscotch chips (I usually use this brand, but the store was out), and 1/2 a cup of unsweet almond or coconut milk. Full fat coconut milk does best, you can also use regular milk.
You dump it all in a double boiler. (You can use a real double boiler, or use a heat proof bowl over a saucepan with simmering water in it. That’s what we do! Works like a charm every time.) Stir it over the heat until you have a fully combined liquid butterscotch sauce. Yum!
This is the ganache you use for butterbeer and to make the cupcakes.
Butterbeer Cupcakes, Sorting Hat Sammies, and Eye of Newts
That is a gluten free cupcake. The cake part is also dairy free, but I cheated and used organic grass-fed butter to make the icing. I almost never do that since we all have a dairy sensitivity and Mr. T has an actual (mild) allergy, but this icing is just not the same without real butter.
You can find hundreds of Butterbeer Cupcake recipes out there that are not gluten free, so if you don’t have to do without, I would use one of those.
Butterbeer Cupcake Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Nutiva Shortening
- 3/4 cup Coconut sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 TBS clear butter flavor
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup butterscotch ganache
- 1/4 cup Zevia cream soda
- 1 cup Tapioca flour
- 2 cups almond flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl and set aside. Cream the shortening and sugar together until smooth. Add remaining liquid ingredients and mix well. Add dry ingredients one cup at a time mixing well. Ladle into paper lined muffin pan and bake for 20 minutes or until done.
Let them cool and make the icing.
Butterscotch Buttercream:
- 2 sticks of unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon clear butter flavor
- 1/4 cup butterscotch ganache
- 2-3 cups of powdered sugar
Cream the butter, add the ganache and flavoring, then slowly add the powdered sugar. If the icing gets too thick, add a tablespoon of cream soda until your desired consistency is reached. Ice the cooled cupcakes, drizzle them with leftover butterscotch ganache, and eat up!
Sorting Hat Sammies work better with cinnamon raisin bread, but we were out. Toast your bread and fill with cheese, meat, or whatever your little muggles love to munch on. Cut the triangles haphazardly so they aren’t perfect. Voila! And newt eyes are really just grapes.
We had Vanilla Caramel black tea with our Harry Potter tea time and it was perfect!
Thanks for joining us! What literary tea time would your learners love?
